A bit, but now I can show my wife this and use it to justify my new 49" monitor. " See honey, it's not like I did what this guy did"

Thanks for the help.

I’m here to help a brother out

573

u/GentlemanThresh 13h ago edited 12h ago

Brother, if you do decide to keep it this way, here's an idea of what I used to do with monitors that are on top of each other.

I turned the top monitor upside down and flipped the image. This way the bezels will be closer together as you remove the thick plastic part usually on the bottom.

It looked much cleaner with flat screen monitors but I'm sure it would be at least a slight improvement even for curved ones.

EDIT: Here is a really badly made version of what I mean, just flip the orientation on the top screen after

unfortunately some gap is inevitable with curved monitors because you want the top one angled down a bit, but yes, this would still be an improvement

A lot of people put the top monitor upside down, so there is no thick bottom bezel in the middle.

With any luck maybe the tops are shaped to touch closer together too?

The gap is mega annoying unfortunately

1.1k

u/HumbrolUser 17h ago

I would be tempted to tape on some black carton paper at the back, to cover up that opening.

Are the monitors the same? Why not just stack them? Might be able to hide the seam that way.

711

u/JoeySinss 17h ago

They are both Samsung Odyssey G9. Perhaps I slightly tip the top one down so it faces me. They will never line up.

1.7k

u/gazpitchy Linux | 9800X3D | 7900XT 17h ago

Flip the top one upside down, so that the large bottom bezel is at the top. It will reduce the gap a lot.

387

u/Ninja_Prolapse 16h ago

Then get a gap mirror. Clips into the edge and basically fuzzies the colours from both so the gap disappears. Only ever seen them on Reddit ads so they’re probably terrible…

161

u/Fiendalways R7 5700X3D | RX6800 | 32GB 3200mhz DDR4| 16h ago

I guess it depends on the use case. They work well to add immersion on triple monitor setup for sim racing

41

u/HexaCube7 14h ago

Afaik they only exist for straight edges. This here would be along the curved edge and would need to be a concave shape.

That ain't gonna work without a special custom built bezel hider kit.

If you treat them as two separate areas, it doesn't really matter. Here they're identical displays and they seem intended to be a contiguous space.

But I've got two different screens and the gap doesn't really bother me, because I'm not using it like they're one bigger screen. Stuff stays in their respective area.

It's a custom keyboard hobbyist thing. We like to have smaller boards, but for some of us who wants a numpad sometimes, we'll get a separate numpad that we can put away whenever we like.

Some boards have it as a part of the kit, and can be wireless or have a quick disconnect setup. It's pretty cool.

I didn’t even think about this but you’re right. Current set up kind of defeats the purpose of ultra wide monitors lol. Might as well just have a giant screen instead

→ More replies (26)

1.5k

u/Swimming_Possible_68 17h ago

Yes.... If you're doing this you might as well just get a huge TV

You have basically taken 2x 32:9 monitors to give yourself a standard 16:9 display but with a huge bezel gap!

342

u/johnny_crow21 16h ago

Lol that second paragraph is simply devastating to his effort plus cash. It’s true though! Mathematically he is getting the same result but with a shitier end product.

37

u/pigpentcg 14h ago

Is there a way in software to seperate a 16:9 display into 2 32:9 displays virtually? If not, then there is still some merit to his setup at least. Kinda. Not really.

23

u/Dizzy_Key_7400 12h ago

You can get displays with multiple inputs to deal with this. Dell used to do a 50” 4k monitor that could be used in any compilation of 4 smaller panels, 2 ultra wides, mix of both or a single large one.

4

u/jbach220 11h ago

That monitor was so cool.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Squeebee007 9h ago

And now they have a 52" 6K monitor that just needs a Thunderbolt connector. Though it can still do splitscreen/PIP via multiple inputs.

11

u/Sea-Debate-3725 10h ago

Fancyzones will let you split it up however you want.

3

u/pigpentcg 9h ago

Does Fancy Zones work contain games within a zone?

7

u/Sea-Debate-3725 8h ago

Yes as long as the game supports windowed mode and whatever resolution you have set the zone to be. If you made a zone with a weird aspect ratio the game probably won't support it, but most games support 16:9, 21:9, 32:9, and 4:3, so just make a zone with one of those and then configure the rest of your screen however you want since windows apps will scale to any aspect ratio.

8

u/narlzac85 13h ago

I really wanted a solution like this when I was using a TV as my monitor. It would have to be in the driver or be entirely external to the PC. The driver already lets you combine displays. Why not the reverse?

Are there big curved TVs out there?

I feel OPs setup may be very good for work, where you just have two very wide separate spaces to place your windows. Aligning apps on a single big screen would be bothersome, unless your running a tiling window manager (not possible under Windows I think?). Plus curvature is great if you're sitting really close to the screen.

For gaming or watching movies double screen like that makes no sense at all IMO.

TVs have high refresh rates now. Did not a few years ago unless you were willing to shell out way too much cash

TCL is the dark horse. They manufactured in house so their prices are cheaper not because it's cheap shit but because they don't deal with 3rd party manufacturing, which everyone else does.

3

u/DoomguyFemboi 9h ago

Yeah my LG CX is a 48" OLED that I bought in 2020 for £800. 4K, 120hz, the best picture quality, and HDR that outstrips monitors by a long way.

This screen is one of if not the best upgrade in visual quality I've ever gotten. More than when I first moved from CRT to LCD, more than when I went from 1080p to 4K. The move from SDR LCD to HDR OLED still blows me away.

5 years later every time I watch something great in HDR it just puts the biggest dumbest smile on my face.

The gap would bother me , I have an ultra wide with a regular 16:9 monitor on the side for discord ect.

u/ceramicsaturn PC Master Race 10h ago

So it's a normal monitor with a gap in the middle.

3

u/10FourGudBuddy 10h ago

The gap makes it looks ugly.

3

u/x86null 10h ago

this is quite diculous if you ask me

3

u/VA1N 10h ago

That gap. My OCD is going crazy looking at it.

3

u/jp0001uk 7h ago

She's right you don't need two taskbars, one will be fine!

3

u/Shartmiester 6h ago

That gap between both monitors would bother me so much.

3

u/Anglerfish_01 6h ago

She is right! You need a third one stacked above the two!

3

u/Shot-Maximum- 6h ago

Why not simply buy a monitor with that specific aspect ratio instead?

This looks horrendous

3

u/ArtInTech 5h ago

She's right man, you gotta close that horizontal gap

Yes.

A single 40-50” 16:9 is much more usable

Yes, this looks terrible. Just sell the two monitors and buy a decent TV of the combined size.

It's ridiculously amazing, if you ask me.

u/tyr_2997 16h ago

I've never really considered a setup like this and y'know, I don't really mind it. I think the comments are viewing it the wrong way, it's not meant to act as one giant screen so the gap doesn't matter. I'd use the bottom one for two productivity windows, half the top one for youtube/media and the other half for whatever. Then for gaming I'd just use the bottom one while using the top one for media/wikis/whatever.

This is hideous, your wife is right.

Ask your wife politely, but firmly, to leave.

If you can, turn the top monitor upside down, then flip the rotation 180 in display settings.

This will put the thinner top bezels on both monitors against each other reducing the dead space.

2

u/UnApt_ 16h ago

I love the wallpaper choice. Everyone saying the gap annoys them- I think it adds a layer of fun

2

u/Tradizar 16h ago

yes, it is. You should turn the upper monitor upside down, so the ticker side goes into the top.

2

u/rtz13th 16h ago

Not enough, you need to cover that window.

2

u/ElectricalUni19 16h ago

Put the top monitor upside down so the smaller bezel is in the middle then flip it in windows settings will look better i think

2

u/defcon1000 15h ago

Actually use the same configuration with two regular 21:9 ultrawides, but they're both on fully articulating arms and I put the bottom monitor just in front of the other one so the seam is barely visible.

I never game in full size on both screens at once, but it is a really killer setup for gaming and productivity.

u/varingian 15h ago

Your wife talks to you?!

2

u/Pyria_Aries 14h ago

u/ItsEntsy 7800x3D, XFX 7900 XTX, 32gb 6000cl30, nvme 4.4 14h ago

Well yea she is.... you should have the top one flipped over so the thinner bezel is toward the middle and positioned so there's no gap between them....

2

u/cheap-guitar-player 14h ago

ridiculously awesome!
