US founding fathers originally expected rivalries between 3 branches of government, executive (President), legislative (senate and House of Representatives), and judicial (Supreme Court and lower courts). They weren’t expecting rivalries between political parties, and especially not when there are only two parties. Currently Republicans control all three branches, so we won’t see one branch turn on another when they’re all working towards the same goal. Founding fathers actually specifically warned against political parties of any kind, but here we are.

I also think there are soo many structrural problems, like the president having too much power and there being too much interference from the executive in the detailed or daily running of government agencies or departments. There are probably more and the first past the post voting system also contributes to massively fucking up American politics. President used to have very little power on his own in official capacity. The position would generally provide a “guiding compass” so to speak as to the general direction the rest of the branches would work towards. What we’re dealing with now is a corrupt president and more than half of our elected officials being sycophants to said president enabling his every will and decree a reality.

Some states have ranked choice voting at a state level, but we don’t have anything like that for federal/national elections. Sure would be nice though, but this goes back to our politicians not wanting to make changes to the system that would result in them having less power.

Same can be said for all the lobbying. Corporate interests paying a middle man to pay our politicians off for the corporation’s benefit. Perfectly legal after a Supreme Court decision in 2010 ironically called “Citizens United”. The “Citizens United” in the legal case were a bunch of corporations arguing that their donations to politicians constitute free speech. So the more money you have, the more political influence you have. Totally not dealing with those consequences today.

AFAIK, that's not quite how it works. The bonds have a date at which they must be repaid (10 years?), and that is constantly happening... by issuing new bonds to cover the additional interests. The solution is much simpler: stop buying new US-bonds. The price will skyrocket just the same.
